Iâm Spencer — a Brighton-based freelance SEO consultant with 10+ years of experience helping UK small businesses grow organic traffic, improve search rankings and convert more of the customers already looking for them on Google. Unlike a traditional SEO agency, youâll always work directly with me — no account managers, no ticket queues, no layers between the strategy and the execution.
Talk it through →Why choose a freelance SEO consultant in Brighton over an agency?
Most SEO agencies in Brighton and Sussex are set up for budgets bigger than small businesses actually have. Account managers, sales teams, project managers, junior SEOs — every layer adds cost without adding value. As a freelance SEO consultant, I cut all of that out.
What you get working with me:
The person quoting you is the person doing the work
A written strategy — you always know what Iâm doing and why
Realistic timelines (SEO takes months, not weeks)
Monthly reports in plain English
Fair pricing, monthly rolling, no lock-in contracts
Direct email and phone access — no ticket queues
Honest prioritisation — Iâll tell you if SEO isnât your best channel before taking your money
I also build and maintain WordPress websites and run WordPress care plans, which means I can fix the technical SEO issues most agencies only flag as ârecommendations for your developerâ. For a full breakdown of the differences, read my freelancer vs agency comparison.
What my SEO service includes
Ranking on Google isnât about one silver bullet. Itâs dozens of evidence-based things working together: technical SEO, on-page optimisation, content, local signals and backlinks. My SEO service covers the full picture — not just the easy-to-sell bits. For the complete breakdown, see my local SEO checklist and how to get your website on Google.
Technical SEO audit & fixes
Full technical SEO audit covering crawl errors, indexation, site speed, Core Web Vitals, mobile usability, broken links, redirect chains, schema markup, robots.txt and XML sitemaps. Fixing the technical foundation is always the first step — everything else works harder afterwards.
Keyword research & search intent mapping
I research the exact commercial, navigational and informational queries your customers are using — including service + location variations, long-tail terms and question-based queries. You get a prioritised keyword map matched to specific pages, with search volume, keyword difficulty and intent.
On-page SEO optimisation
Page titles, meta descriptions, H1/H2 structure, internal linking, image alt text, schema markup, canonical tags, content depth and semantic keyword coverage — all tuned to your target rankings. I rewrite pages myself rather than handing over a PDF of recommendations.
Local SEO & Google Business Profile
For most Brighton and Sussex businesses, local SEO is the biggest lever. I optimise your Google Business Profile, build local citations, fix NAP (name, address, phone) inconsistencies across the web, earn real reviews, and create location-specific content that wins local pack and map results.
Content strategy & topic clusters
Rankings follow useful content. I plan topic clusters around your core commercial services, write blog posts that target specific queries with clear search intent, and make sure every piece internally links back to the pages that drive enquiries.
Backlinks & digital PR
Ethical link building through genuine relationships — local business directories, guest posts on relevant UK blogs, digital PR for newsworthy client stories, and broken link reclamation. No buying links, no PBNs, nothing that puts your site at risk of a Google penalty.
Monthly reporting & transparent results
Plain-English monthly reports showing exactly what Iâve done, whatâs working, whatâs moved in the rankings, traffic trends and whatâs planned for next month. No dashboards full of vanity metrics — just the numbers that matter to your business growth.
Every plan is built from the same seven areas — the mix just changes depending on what your site needs first. The audit tells us which of them to start with.

Ways I can help with your SEO
Whether you need local visibility in one town, a UK-wide campaign, or a one-off audit to point you in the right direction, the work is always done by me.
Local SEO across Brighton and Sussex
If your customers are within driving distance, local SEO is where Iâd start. Google Business Profile, citations, consistent NAP details, reviews and location content all pull in the same direction. I have dedicated pages for SEO Sussex and SEO West Sussex if you want the county-level detail.
SEO for small businesses
Small budgets need sharp prioritisation. I work out which handful of pages and queries are actually worth the effort, then fix those properly before moving on. See my SEO for small businesses page, or my guide to how much SEO costs in the UK, if youâre still weighing up the spend.
UK-wide SEO, delivered remotely
All the work happens over email, phone and video calls, so it makes no difference whether youâre in Hove or Newcastle. I have clients across Sussex, Surrey, Kent and further afield, and everything from the audit to the monthly report is delivered the same way.
SEO on a site Iâve built or maintain
This is where a freelancer beats a retainer with an agency. Because I build WordPress websites and run WordPress care plans, the technical fixes get made rather than added to a list for someone else to action. Speed, schema, redirects, indexation — all handled in one place.
Guides you can use for free
I write up most of what I do so you can check the work — or do some of it yourself.
Start with the free SEO audit
Before any money changes hands, Iâll look at your site and tell you whatâs holding it back. If the answer is that SEO isnât your best channel right now, Iâll say that too. Request the free audit and Iâll come back to you personally.
One person on your account. Monthly rolling, no lock-in.

Based in Brighton, I provide freelance SEO services to small businesses across Sussex, Surrey and the wider UK. Click your local area below for details — or get in touch from anywhere in the UK, as all SEO work is delivered remotely.
Regional coverage: For county-wide SEO services see my dedicated SEO Sussex, SEO West Sussex and SEO Surrey pages. If your area isnât listed above, get in touch — I work with clients across the UK.
The sites behind the SEO
Most of the SEO I run sits on a website I built or look after, so the two jobs are never separate for long.
You can browse the builds in my portfolio — 100+ WordPress sites for businesses across Sussex and the UK. The ranking and traffic detail behind those campaigns I keep off the public site, because most clients would rather their competitors didnât read it. Ask me on a call and Iâll walk you through the before-and-after figures for a business like yours.
Book a call →How I work — the 5-step process
Every SEO engagement starts with the same process. Transparent, predictable, and designed to get you ranking within the timescale thatâs realistic for your market.
Discovery call (free, 30 minutes)
We talk about your business, your current rankings, your competitors and what âsuccessâ looks like. If SEO isnât the right channel for you, Iâll say so.
Full SEO audit
Technical SEO review, keyword research, competitor analysis, content gap analysis and local SEO audit. You get a written report with prioritised recommendations — not a 60-page PDF of generic findings.
Strategy & roadmap
I turn the audit into a 90-day action plan mapped to your specific business goals. You approve the plan before any work starts.
Monthly execution
Technical fixes, on-page optimisation, content, local SEO, outreach — whatever the roadmap calls for, done properly and documented.
Monthly reporting
Plain-English report showing what I did, what moved, whatâs next. No vanity metrics, no dashboards full of noise.
SEO FAQs

Get a quoteHow long does SEO take to work?
Expect meaningful local SEO results in 3–6 months, and 6–12 months for competitive national terms. Anyone promising page-one rankings in weeks is either targeting zero-competition keywords or being dishonest. Iâll always give you realistic timelines up front — and show you what âprogressâ looks like at 30, 60 and 90 days.
How much does SEO cost in the UK?
How much SEO costs in the UK is always a big question. Fair freelance SEO rates in the UK typically run £250–£1,500/month depending on scope. My packages start at £250/mo for Local SEO Starter, £500/mo for Growth, and £1,000/mo for Premium. One-off audits are £295. Agency retainers usually start at £1,500–£3,000/mo for equivalent work because of overheads you donât pay with a freelancer.
Whatâs the difference between a freelance SEO consultant and an agency?
An agency gives you a sales rep, an account manager, a project manager and a junior SEO — all billing to your retainer. A freelance SEO consultant gives you direct access to the expert doing the work.
Agencies scale better for large budgets; freelancers deliver better value and communication for small businesses. I offer SEO for small businesses and larger multinational companies. Read my full DIY vs freelancer vs agency comparison.
Is SEO still worth it in 2026 with AI search?
Yes. AI Overviews and ChatGPT-style answers pull from the same web pages that rank in traditional search — so being optimised for Google is still the foundation for being visible in AI results too. Whatâs changed: rankings now reward genuine expertise, entity authority and well-structured content (schema markup matters more than ever).
Whatâs the difference between local SEO and national SEO?
Local SEO focuses on ranking for queries with geographic intent (e.g. âaccountant Brightonâ) and dominating the Google Map pack. National SEO targets broader queries without location (e.g. âhow to file self assessmentâ). Most small businesses need local SEO first, national SEO as a secondary strategy once local is sorted.
Do you offer SEO guarantees?
No — and nobody reputable should. Googleâs algorithm is a black box we donât control, so guaranteeing a specific ranking would be dishonest. What I do guarantee: the work itself will be done properly, documented, and explained clearly. If youâre not seeing progress after 90 days, we review the strategy together.
Can I see examples of your SEO work?
Yes — happy to share case studies on an initial call. For privacy I donât list client names publicly, but I can show you before/after rankings, traffic graphs and revenue impact for businesses similar to yours.
Do you work with businesses outside Brighton?
Yes — my SEO service is UK-wide. Based in Brighton, I work with clients across Sussex, Surrey, Kent and the wider UK. Everything is delivered remotely. For local service pages, see SEO Sussex, SEO West Sussex, SEO Surrey or click any town from the Areas I Cover section above.
Are you an SEO agency in Brighton or a freelance consultant?
Iâm a freelance SEO consultant, born and based in Brighton — not an agency. Businesses that come to me after using an SEO agency in Brighton usually say the same thing: they were paying for reporting layers, not results. With me, the analysis, the work and the communication all come from one person.
Do you provide search engine optimisation in Brighton only?
No — search engine optimisation works the same wherever you are. Most of my SEO clients are in Brighton and across Sussex, but I work with businesses UK-wide: local SEO, national campaigns and everything in between.
What do your SEO services in Brighton cost?
My SEO plans are priced monthly with no long-term contracts — youâll find current pricing further up this page. Every engagement starts with an audit, so you know exactly what needs fixing and why. And if I think SEO isnât the right spend for your business yet, Iâll tell you.
