Web Design Brighton
Brighton web design from a freelancer who actually picks up the phone. Iām Spencer — a Brighton-based web designer and former British 800m Champion with 10+ years of marketing experience. I build custom WordPress websites for businesses across Brighton and Hove that look professional, work on every device, and generate real enquiries.
No agency fees. No account managers. No monthly hostage contracts. You deal with me from the first call to the day it goes live — and after.

More about me →Web design services in Brighton
Iāve been delivering Brighton web design for over a decade — from one-page sites for sole traders to full ecommerce stores. Every site is custom-designed on WordPress, fully responsive, and optimised for search from day one.
Website design
Professional, responsive web design in Brighton that converts visitors into customers. Custom WordPress builds designed with proper UX, built for the local market, and easy for you to manage — delivering results that outperform DIY options like Wix or Squarespace.
Web design services →Search engine optimisation
Strategic SEO for Brighton businesses. Data-driven local search optimisation that increases qualified traffic and generates real enquiries — not vanity rankings for terms nobody searches.
SEO services →Ecommerce website design
Custom ecommerce design and development on WooCommerce or Shopify. Seamless checkout, inventory management, secure payments and the marketing tools Brighton retailers and service providers actually use.
Ecommerce websites →Website hosting
Reliable, secure hosting from £10/month. UK-based servers with 99.9% uptime, daily backups, free SSL certificates, and unlimited storage, email and databases — all with support from me, not a ticket queue.
Hosting and care plans →Branding & graphic design
From logo design and brand identity to marketing materials and digital graphics — cohesive visual identities that resonate with your audience. See the design work in more detail.
Branding and graphic design →Website support & maintenance
Regular updates, security monitoring, backup management and technical support to keep your site running. Care plans start from £30/month — separate from hosting, so you only pay for what you need.
Website support →Does your website let your business down?
Your website should showcase your expertise and turn visitors into paying customers. Most do the complete opposite. Across Brighton and Sussex I see the same six problems over and over.
Invisible on Google
Your site is buried on page two, where nobody looks. Meanwhile competitors with properly optimised pages are taking the enquiries that should be yours.
Looks outdated on mobile
Customers judge your professionalism in about three seconds. If the site was built for a desktop in 2010, that judgement is already made before they read a word.
Zero enquiries coming in
Traffic without enquiries is just bandwidth. If thereās no clear next step on the page, visitors browse and leave without ever contacting you.
Expensive monthly fees
Paying £50+ a month for āmaintenanceā with nothing to show for it, on a platform you donāt own and canāt leave without starting again.
Slow and unreliable
Loading times that send customers straight back to the search results, and an inbox full of downtime notifications you canāt do anything about.
Stuck on a builder you rent
Wix, Squarespace or GoDaddy: stop paying and the site disappears. A rebuild on WordPress usually costs less over two years than carrying on.
Your website should be your hardest-working employee, generating leads 24/7. If it isnāt, thatās fixable — and it starts with a free mockup so you can see the difference before spending anything.

What is your web design process?
Five stages, from first conversation to a website you can run yourself.
Discovery and planning
You tell me about your business goals, your customers and what the site actually needs to do. That conversation sets its purpose, the content strategy and the functionality that matters.
Design and wireframing
I create wireframes and visual mockups showing structure, layout and direction — colours, typography and imagery that fit your brand. You see it before anything gets built.
WordPress development
I build the custom WordPress site — responsive, fast-loading, optimised for search, and set up so itās genuinely easy for you to update yourself afterwards.
Testing, launch and support
Tested across devices and browsers, refined, then launched with full training. After that I stay on for maintenance, updates and support — as much or as little as you want.
Where I work
Most of my clients are in Brighton and Hove, but I work right across Sussex and into Surrey. If youāre further afield, Zoom or Google Meet works perfectly well — plenty of my work is done that way. Hereās where the main area pages live:

Small businesses and startups typically fall between £800 and £1,500; established businesses with ecommerce, booking systems or complex integrations run £2,000 to £5,000+.
How long do website projects take?
It varies with content and complexity. A straightforward 5-page site is typically 7-10 days. A larger website of 10-15 pages needing more development work usually takes 3-5 weeks. Youāll get a clear timeline during that first conversation, and Iāll tell you upfront if content is likely to be the thing that holds it up — it usually is.
Are you a web design agency in Brighton or a freelancer?
A freelancer, and deliberately so. You deal with me from the first call to launch and afterwards — no account managers, no handoffs, no paying for office overheads. Thatās how the pricing stays fixed and the communication stays direct. If you want the longer version, thereās more on my WordPress freelancer page.
Do you work with both small and large businesses?
Yes, across Brighton and the surrounding areas. For small businesses and startups (£800-£1,500) I offer streamlined packages suited to tradespeople, local shops and service providers who need something professional without overspending. For established businesses (£2,000-£5,000+) I build more sophisticated WordPress solutions with ecommerce, booking systems and complex integrations. Either way I tailor the approach to your budget, timeline and goals.
Why should I choose a local web designer in Brighton?
Because I know the market youāre selling into. Based in Brighton, I understand the local business landscape, what customers here expect, and who youāre competing with. It also means face-to-face meetings are straightforward — at my office or a local coffee shop — rather than everything happening through a portal.
Do you offer SEO? I want to rank on page one
Yes. Every site I build includes on-page SEO fundamentals as standard — titles, meta descriptions, local keyword targeting and Google Business Profile setup. For ongoing work I offer monthly retainers from £250/month covering content, citations and link building. Iāll also tell you honestly whether SEO is the right spend for your business, or whether something else would move the needle faster.
Do you use WordPress?
All of my websites are built on WordPress, or Shopify where an online store calls for it. WordPress means no monthly platform fee, full ownership of your content, and the freedom to change host or developer whenever you want. Itās also very secure when itās set up and maintained properly, which is part of what youāre paying for.
What is responsive web design?
It means the site adapts to whatever device itās viewed on, rather than being a shrunken desktop page. Every site I build is tested across iPhone, Android, tablet and desktop as standard. Thereās a fuller explanation on my guide to responsive web design.
Can you rebuild my existing website?
Often, yes — and itās a big part of what I do. If youāre on a builder platform youāre renting, a rebuild on WordPress usually costs less over two years than continuing to pay the subscription. If youāre already on WordPress I can modernise whatās there without losing your existing search rankings, which matters more than most people realise.
Where is your office based?
Main Floor, Clarendon Mansions, 80 East St, Brighton, BN1 1NF. Meetings are by appointment — call 01273 011148 to arrange one.
Iām based outside Brighton — can we still work together?
Easily. Most of my clients are in Brighton and Hove or East Sussex, but I work across Sussex and Surrey, and further afield over Zoom or Google Meet. Plenty of projects run start to finish without a single in-person meeting.
