Sports Club Website Design

I’m Spencer, a freelance web designer based in Brighton, and I build websites for member-run sports clubs across Sussex and the UK — football, rugby, cricket, tennis, hockey, bowls and athletics clubs run by volunteers in their spare time. I’ll build you a site the whole committee can actually keep up to date: fixtures, results, news, membership sign-up and subs, all in one place.

No agency fees. No template you have to fight with. Just a practical club website built around how your club really works — and how little time your volunteers have to run it.

Whether you’re a grassroots football club, a village cricket side, a tennis or bowls club, a hockey team or an athletics club, I’ll build a website your committee can run without needing a developer on speed dial. Already have a site that’s gone stale? A redesign keeps what works and fixes what doesn’t.

Why it matters

Why your sports club needs a proper website

Your social media is where the day-to-day chatter happens — but a Facebook page isn’t a home. It doesn’t take membership payments, it buries your fixtures under yesterday’s posts, and it isn’t yours. Your website is the permanent record: the place a new player, a parent or a sponsor lands when they search for the club.

Most clubs are run by volunteers with day jobs. So the real test of a club website isn’t how it looks on launch day — it’s whether the secretary can update the fixtures on a Sunday night without ringing anyone. That’s what I build for: a site that’s genuinely easy to keep current.

Post fixtures, results and news in minutes — no technical know-how needed

Take membership sign-ups and subs online instead of chasing cash and cheques

Give your junior section a home with clear safeguarding information for parents

Show sponsors a professional shopfront worth putting their name to

Promote clubhouse and facility hire as a steady income stream

Handle member data properly and stay on the right side of GDPR

As a former British 800m Champion, I’ve spent a lot of my life inside club sport — training nights, committee meetings, the volunteers who quietly hold it all together. I understand the club from the inside, and I build the website to fit how it actually runs, not how a marketing brochure imagines it does.

The essentials

What makes a good sports club website?

I’ve built plenty of sites for clubs and community organisations. Here’s what separates a club website that pulls its weight from one that sits there going stale.

Fixtures, results and league tables

The information visitors want most. I set up fixtures, results and news so a committee member can update them in a couple of minutes, and I can pull in league tables and results automatically from Full-Time, Play-Cricket, LTA or your league’s own feed so you’re not typing them out twice.

Membership sign-up and online subs

Chasing subs is the job no volunteer wants. I build online membership forms and subs payments so players can join and pay from their phone, and the money lands in the club account without anyone rattling a tin at training.

A proper junior section

For most parents the website is the first check before they let their child join. Clear age groups, training times, coach information and easy-to-find safeguarding and welfare pages tell them the club is well run and takes child protection seriously.

Events and tournament pages

Presentation nights, fun days, tournaments and open days — the events that raise money and bring people together. Dedicated event pages with details and sign-up keep it all on your own site rather than lost in a group chat.

Sponsorship and facility hire

Clubs run on money that has to come from somewhere. A tidy sponsors page that credits the businesses backing you — and a clear clubhouse or pitch hire page — turns your website into a small but genuine revenue earner, not just a cost.

Social media as the hub, website as the record

Your Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp are where the club talks day to day, and that’s fine. The website is the permanent record underneath it — the place fixtures, contacts and membership live so they don’t vanish down a feed.

Every club website I build includes these as standard. Want to talk it through for your own club? Tell me what you’re running and I’ll tell you honestly what you do and don’t need.

Pricing

How much does a sports club website cost?

Clubs are not-for-profit and money is nearly always tight, so let’s be straight about it. Most club websites I build start from around £800, with the majority landing between £800 and £3,000 depending on how many pages and features you need.

A larger multi-section club — several teams, a junior academy, online membership, league integration and facility hire — might sit in the £2,000 – £5,000+ range. I’ll always tell you where the sensible line is rather than selling you features your volunteers won’t use.

If the club can’t fund it out of subs, it’s worth looking at grants. Sport England and National Lottery funding, along with your national governing body and local council schemes, can often cover digital and club-development costs. A fixed written quote from me makes that kind of application much easier to put together.

Optional ongoing costs, kept separate and clear: hosting from £10/month and care plans from £30/month, and SEO from £250/month if you want to be found for more than just your club name.

What’s included

Sports club web design services I offer

Everything a member-run club needs, built in from the start so your volunteers aren’t left bolting it on later.

Custom club website design

Every club site I build is designed around your club — its colours, its badge, its teams and its history — not pulled off a shelf. Whether you’re a football, rugby, cricket, tennis, hockey, bowls or athletics club, the site reflects who you actually are rather than a generic sports template with your logo dropped in the corner.

Fixtures, results and league tables

The pages people visit most, made simple to keep current:

  • Easy fixtures and results updates any committee member can manage
  • Automatic league tables and results from FA Full-Time, Play-Cricket, LTA and other league feeds
  • Team pages, squad lists and match reports
  • A news area that keeps your website looking alive, not abandoned

Where your league publishes a feed, I’ll wire it in so you update in one place, not two.

Membership and online subs

The single biggest time-saver for most clubs. I build online membership sign-up and subs payments so players and parents can join and pay from their phone — one-off or recurring — and the money lands straight in the club account. No more spreadsheets of who’s paid, no more chasing cash at training, and a clear record for your treasurer at the end of the season.

Junior sections and safeguarding

Your junior section deserves its own clear space — age groups, training times, coaches and how to join. Just as importantly, I make your safeguarding and welfare information easy to find, with your welfare officer’s contact details, policies and codes of conduct where parents and governing bodies expect to see them. It reassures families and shows the club takes child protection seriously.

Events and tournaments

Presentation evenings, fun days, quiz nights, tournaments and open days keep a club social and raise money. I build event and tournament pages with all the details, sign-up and — where it helps — ticketing or entry payments, so it all stays on your own website and in your own records rather than scattered across group chats.

Sponsorship and facility hire

Two of the most reliable ways a club earns beyond subs, both worth doing properly:

  • A sponsors page that credits your backers with logos and links — something they’re proud to be listed on
  • Clear sponsorship packages so businesses can see what they get
  • Clubhouse, pitch, court and function-room hire pages with enquiry forms
  • An easy way to promote the bar, café or events space to the wider community

GDPR and member data

Clubs hold a lot of personal data — members, juniors, emergency contacts — and that comes with responsibilities. I build in proper cookie consent, a privacy policy, clear data statements on your sign-up and contact forms, and secure handling of the information you collect. You gather only what you actually need, and you can show a governing body or a parent that member data is looked after properly.

Built on WordPress

Every club site I build uses WordPress, so your committee can run it without me. Why it suits clubs:

  • Add fixtures, results and news yourself, no developer needed
  • Hand it over cleanly when this year’s secretary passes it to next year’s
  • No lock-in — the club owns the website outright
  • Affordable hosting and a huge range of add-ons

I provide full training for your committee, and ongoing support from £10/month is there if you want a hand.

Hosting & ongoing support

Your website needs to stay secure, fast and online without eating into anyone’s volunteer time. I offer managed hosting from £10/month and care plans from £30/month — security updates, backups, plugin updates and a friendly point of contact when you need a change. These are optional and always kept separate from the build cost, so you know exactly what you’re paying for.

All of it built in as standard. Fixed price, agreed upfront.

The process

How working together works

Four stages, from first chat to a website your committee can run itself.

First

A chat about the club

I start with how your club runs, what the committee needs, and what would genuinely save you time — fixtures, subs, junior section, sponsors. No sales pitch, just an honest look at what will work for your budget.

Then

Quote and mockup

A fixed price with no surprises, and a free mockup so the whole committee can see the direction before the club commits a penny — handy for a grant application or a club vote too.

After that

Design and build

I handle everything — design, pages, fixtures and results setup, membership and subs, league integration and safeguarding pages. You’ll see progress throughout and can feed back at every stage.

Finally

Handover and training

Your finished website plus plain-English training for the committee, so whoever holds the login this year — or next — can keep it up to date. The club owns it outright.

Can a non-technical committee member really update the site?

Yes — that’s the whole point. I build club sites on WordPress and set up fixtures, results and news so they’re as simple as filling in a form. I give your committee plain-English training, and because clubs hand over roles each year, I make it straightforward for next season’s secretary to pick up where this year’s left off. If you’d rather not touch it at all, my support plans cover that too.

Can you pull in our fixtures, results and league tables automatically?

In most cases, yes. Where your league or governing body publishes a feed — FA Full-Time for football, Play-Cricket for cricket, the LTA for tennis and many others — I can wire your fixtures, results and league tables straight into the site so you update in one place rather than typing everything twice. Where there’s no feed, I set up a quick manual system that any committee member can manage in a couple of minutes.

Can members join and pay their subs online?

Yes, and for most clubs it’s the single biggest time-saver. I build online membership sign-up and subs payments so players and parents can join and pay from their phone, one-off or recurring, with the money landing straight in the club account. It ends the cash-at-training routine, gives your treasurer a clear record, and means nobody’s chasing the same few unpaid subs all season.

How do you handle our junior section and safeguarding?

Your junior section gets its own clear area — age groups, training times, coaches and how to join — and I make sure your safeguarding and welfare information is easy to find: welfare officer contact, policies and codes of conduct where parents and your governing body expect them. Parents almost always check the website before letting a child join, and well-presented safeguarding pages show the club is well run and takes child protection seriously.

We’re not-for-profit and money’s tight. Can you help fund it?

I get it — most clubs run hand to mouth. Prices start from £800 and most club websites land between £800 and £3,000, and I’ll always steer you away from features your volunteers won’t use. Where subs won’t stretch, grants often can: Sport England, National Lottery funding, your national governing body and local council schemes can frequently cover digital and club-development costs. A fixed written quote from me makes those applications much easier to put together.

Doesn’t our Facebook page do the job already?

Social media is brilliant for day-to-day chatter, and you should keep it — but it isn’t a home. It can’t take membership payments, it buries your fixtures under yesterday’s posts, and you don’t own it. Think of your social channels as the hub where the club talks, and the website as the permanent record underneath: fixtures, contacts, membership and safeguarding that stay put instead of scrolling out of sight.

Can the website help us bring in sponsorship and hire income?

Yes. A tidy sponsors page that credits your backers with logos and links gives businesses something they’re proud to appear on, and clear sponsorship packages make it easy for them to say yes. I also build clubhouse, pitch, court and function-room hire pages with enquiry forms, so your facilities earn money from the wider community rather than sitting empty midweek. For many clubs these two things turn the website from a cost into a small earner.

Do you only work with clubs in Sussex?

No. I’m based in Brighton, Sussex, but I work with clubs across the UK — most of the process runs over calls, email and shared documents, so where you’re based has never been a barrier. As a former British 800m Champion I’ve spent much of my life inside club sport, so wherever your club is, I understand how it works.

What about GDPR and all the member data we hold?

Clubs hold a lot of personal data — members, juniors, emergency contacts — so it needs handling properly. I build in cookie consent, a privacy policy, clear data statements on your forms and secure handling of what you collect, and I make sure you only gather the information you actually need. That keeps you on the right side of GDPR and means you can reassure parents and your governing body that member data is looked after.

How is this different from a gym or fitness website?

A gym is a commercial business selling memberships to customers; a sports club is run by volunteers for its members. The priorities are different — a club site is built around fixtures, subs, junior sections, safeguarding and sponsors rather than lead generation and class timetables. If you’re actually a commercial fitness business, my gym and fitness website design is the right page; if your club is a registered charity chasing donations and grants, my charity web design may suit better. If you’re a member-run club, this is the one.

Do we own the website, or are we tied to you?

You own it outright. It’s built on WordPress with no lock-in, so the club keeps full control and can take it anywhere. Support and hosting plans are entirely optional and kept separate from the build cost — you take them because they’re useful, not because you’re trapped. You can see more of how I work across my portfolio and other sectors.
