Why does your website need to be responsive in 2026?
At Podium Design, every website we build is fully responsive — designed to look sharp, load fast, and convert visitors whether they’re on a phone, tablet, or desktop. No separate mobile version. No pinching and zooming. One site that works perfectly everywhere. Since Google switched to mobile-first indexing, your site is ranked based on how it performs on mobile — not desktop. A website that looks great on a 27-inch monitor but breaks on an iPhone is not just a bad user experience. It’s actively hurting your Google rankings, your bounce rate, and your conversions. I’m Spencer Thomas, a freelance WordPress web designer based in Brighton. I’ve built 55+ responsive websites for businesses across Sussex, Surrey, and the UK — and mobile-first design is baked into every single one from day one, not bolted on at the end.
What's included in every responsive website
Mobile-First Design
I design for the smallest screen first, then scale up. This means mobile visitors get a properly designed experience — not a desktop layout squashed down. Touch-friendly navigation, large tap targets, and layouts that make sense on a 375px screen. Every breakpoint from phone to 4K monitor is tested before launch.
Fast Loading on All Networks
Responsive doesn’t mean slow. Every site I build uses WebP images, lazy loading, browser caching, and minimal bloat. I run every site through Google PageSpeed Insights before launch — targeting 90+ on mobile. Fast load times mean better user experience, lower bounce rates, and better SEO rankings thanks to Google’s Core Web Vitals.
Cross-Browser & Cross-Device Tested
Before any site goes live, I test it on real devices — iPhones, Android phones, iPads — and across Chrome, Safari, Firefox, and Edge. I also use browser testing tools to simulate hundreds of device and browser combinations. No surprises on launch day, no awkward “it only broke on mobile” moments afterwards.
A responsive web design service that covers everything
Mobile-first responsive layouts
Every website I build is designed mobile-first — starting at the smallest screen and scaling up. The layout, typography, spacing, and navigation all adapt fluidly to any screen width: from 375px phones to 1920px desktop monitors. No separate “mobile site”. No fixed-width layouts that don’t fit. One codebase, intelligently responsive at every breakpoint.
SEO-ready from day one
Responsive design and SEO are directly linked. Since Google’s mobile-first indexing update, your site is ranked based on its mobile experience — not desktop. Every responsive site I build includes correct heading structure, schema markup, fast load times, and clean URLs. You won’t need a separate “SEO pass” after launch — it’s built in from the first wireframe.
Performance optimised for Core Web Vitals
Google’s Core Web Vitals — LCP (load speed), CLS (visual stability), INP (interactivity) — are direct ranking factors. Every site I build is optimised for these scores: WebP images, lazy loading, minimal JavaScript, fast hosting, and proper caching. I target 90+ on Google PageSpeed Insights on mobile, not just desktop. The average responsive site I build scores 94/100.
Touch-optimised interfaces
Mobile users interact with their fingers, not a mouse. That means buttons need to be at least 44×44px to tap reliably. Navigation menus need hamburger menus that work without hover states. Forms need to trigger the right keyboard (numeric for phone fields, email keyboard for email fields). Carousels need to be swipeable. These details are often overlooked by designers who design desktop-first — I build them in as standard.
Retina-ready graphics
Modern phones and MacBooks use high-DPI “Retina” screens that show twice the pixel density of standard displays. Standard images look blurry on these screens if not optimised for them. I use modern image formats and responsive image techniques (srcset) to serve the correct resolution for each device — sharp images on Retina screens, appropriately sized files on standard screens. Result: images that always look crisp without unnecessarily large file sizes.

Responsive Web Design Pricing
All packages include fully responsive design as standard — mobile-friendliness is not an add-on. It’s how every website should be built.
