Photographer Website Design That Showcases Your Work

I’m Spencer, a freelance web designer based in Brighton. I build custom portfolio websites for photographers across Sussex and the UK — sites that showcase your work beautifully, load fast on every device, and actually convert visitors into paying clients.

If you’re a photographer relying on Instagram alone to get bookings, or stuck with a clunky template site that doesn’t do your images justice, I can help. No agency fees. No cookie-cutter templates. Just a purpose-built photography website designed around your style, your services, and the clients you want to attract.

Why Photographers Need a Professional Website

Instagram is great for discovery, but it’s not a website. You don’t own your Instagram audience — the algorithm decides who sees your work. A professional photography website gives you a platform you control, where potential clients can see your full portfolio, understand your services, and book you directly.

Here’s what a proper photographer website does that social media can’t:

  • Displays your portfolio in full resolution without compression or cropping
  • Shows up when people search “wedding photographer near me” or “commercial photographer Sussex”
  • Lets clients browse galleries, check pricing, and enquire — all in one place
  • Builds trust through testimonials, behind-the-scenes content, and your story
  • Works on every device — phone, tablet, desktop — without losing image quality

Most photographers I speak to have either no website at all, a free Wix site they set up years ago, or a portfolio platform like Pixieset that they’ve outgrown. The problem with template platforms is they all look the same — and when every photographer’s site looks identical, you lose the one thing that should set you apart: your visual identity.

That’s where I come in. I build custom WordPress websites specifically designed for photographers — sites that load fast, look stunning, and actually generate enquiries.

What I Include in Every Photographer Website

Portfolio Galleries That Do Your Work Justice

Your images are everything. Every photographer website I build features custom gallery layouts designed to showcase your work at its best — full-width hero images, masonry grids, lightbox viewing, and filterable categories so visitors can browse by genre (weddings, portraits, commercial, events). No tiny thumbnails. No awkward cropping. Just your photography, presented beautifully.

Image Optimisation for Speed

Photographers’ sites are image-heavy by nature, and that can kill loading speed if not handled properly. I optimise every image for web — proper compression, lazy loading, next-gen formats (WebP), and responsive image sizes — so your site loads fast without sacrificing visual quality. Google rewards fast sites, and visitors leave slow ones.

Booking and Enquiry Integration

Whether you use a booking system like Calendly, HoneyBook, or Studio Ninja, or prefer a simple contact form with package selection, I’ll integrate it seamlessly into your website. Click-to-call buttons, WhatsApp links, and enquiry forms on every page mean potential clients can reach you however they prefer.

Client Proofing Portals

If you deliver galleries to clients online, I can integrate proofing platforms like Pixieset, ShootProof, or Pic-Time directly into your website. Your clients get a seamless experience — browsing proofs, selecting favourites, and ordering prints — all under your brand, not a third-party platform.

Instagram Feed Integration

Your Instagram feed can display directly on your website, keeping your site fresh with your latest work without you having to update anything manually. It bridges the gap between your social presence and your professional portfolio.

Before and After Sliders

For retouching specialists, real estate photographers, or anyone wanting to show their editing process, I build interactive before-and-after comparison sliders. Visitors drag to reveal the transformation — it’s engaging, impressive, and demonstrates your skill in a way static images can’t.

Mobile-First Design

Over 70% of people browsing photography websites are on their phone — often while planning a wedding, looking for a headshot photographer, or comparing portfolios. Every site I build is fully responsive and tested across iPhone, Android, tablet, and desktop. Your galleries look just as striking on a phone screen as they do on a 27-inch monitor.

Built on WordPress

Every photographer website I build runs on WordPress — the world’s most popular content management system. You can add new galleries, update your pricing, write blog posts about recent shoots, and manage your content without any technical knowledge. I’ll train you during handover so you’re fully confident.

What Makes a Good Photography Website?

I’ve built websites for creative professionals across Sussex and the UK, including interior designers and other visual industries. Here’s what separates photographer websites that book clients from ones that just sit there looking pretty:

Lead with your strongest work. Your homepage hero image or gallery should stop people in their tracks. Don’t bury your best shots three clicks deep — put them front and centre. First impressions matter, and you’ve got about three seconds before someone decides to stay or leave.

Keep navigation simple. Portfolio, About, Services, Pricing, Contact. That’s it for most photographers. Don’t overcomplicate things with dozens of subpages. Make it easy for someone to go from “wow, great photos” to “I want to book this person” in as few clicks as possible.

Show your personality. An About page with a professional headshot and genuine copy about who you are, your approach, and what makes you different. People book photographers they connect with — especially for weddings and portraits. Let your personality show through.

Display pricing (or at least a starting point). Every photographer debates this, but here’s the reality — if you don’t show any pricing, most visitors will assume you’re either too expensive or too vague to bother with. Even “packages start from” gives people enough to decide whether to enquire.

SEO for photographers. Gorgeous galleries mean nothing if nobody can find your site. Every page needs proper titles, descriptions, alt text on images, and location-based keywords. “Wedding photographer Brighton” or “commercial photography Sussex” — these are the searches that bring in clients.

Blog with real shoots. A blog showcasing recent sessions does two things: it keeps your site fresh for Google, and it gives potential clients a window into what working with you actually looks like. Wedding venue reviews, behind-the-scenes content, and styled shoot features all build trust and improve your search rankings.

Fast loading speed. I cannot stress this enough for photography websites. A beautiful site that takes 8 seconds to load will lose half its visitors before they see a single image. Proper image optimisation, caching, and a quality hosting setup are non-negotiable.

SEO for Photographers

Getting found on Google is essential for photographers. Whether someone is searching for a wedding photographer in their area, a headshot photographer for their team, or a product photographer for their brand — you need to show up. Every photographer website I build includes:

  • Local SEO setup targeting “[photographer type] + [your area]” searches
  • Google Business Profile optimisation
  • Proper page titles, meta descriptions, and heading structure
  • Alt text on every image (Google can’t “see” your photos without it)
  • Fast loading speeds (Google rewards this)
  • Mobile-friendly design (Google requires this)
  • Schema markup for local businesses
  • Blog setup for ongoing content (venue reviews, shoot features, tips)

Want to rank higher than other photographers in your area? I offer ongoing SEO retainers to build your visibility over time — content creation, link building, Google Business Profile management, and monthly reporting.

How Much Does a Photographer Website Cost?

Most photographer websites I build fall between £800 and £1,500, depending on the number of galleries, features, and complexity. That typically includes:

  • 5-8 page custom WordPress website
  • Portfolio galleries with filtering and lightbox
  • Contact forms and booking integration
  • Mobile responsive design
  • Image optimisation for speed
  • Basic SEO setup
  • SSL certificate
  • Training and 30 days post-launch support

Photographers needing client proofing integration, print shop functionality, or extensive service area pages may be in the £1,500 – £2,500 range.

Every project gets a fixed quote upfront — no hourly billing, no surprise invoices. And I offer a free mockup before you commit, so you can see exactly what you’re getting.

Optional ongoing costs: hosting from £10/month, SEO retainers from £250/month.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you only work with photographers in Sussex?

No. While I’m based in Brighton, Sussex, I work with photographers across the UK. Most of my communication happens over Zoom and email anyway — I’ve built websites for photographers and creative professionals in Sussex, London, Surrey, Kent, and beyond. If you’re a Sussex-based photographer, I’m happy to meet locally.

Can you integrate my existing booking system?

Yes. I work with all the popular photography booking platforms — HoneyBook, Studio Ninja, Dubsado, Calendly, and more. I’ll embed your booking flow directly into your website so clients never have to leave your site to check availability or submit an enquiry.

How long does a photographer website take to build?

3-4 weeks for most photographer websites. Simpler portfolio sites can be quicker. Larger sites with client proofing integration, print shops, or extensive blog archives may take 4-6 weeks. I’ll give you a timeline during our initial call.

Will my photos look good on mobile?

Absolutely. Every photographer website I build is fully responsive and tested across devices — iPhone, Android, tablet, and desktop. Your galleries are optimised for each screen size, so images look sharp and load fast whether someone is browsing on a phone or a cinema display.

Can I update my portfolio myself?

Yes. I build on WordPress with an intuitive editor. Upload new galleries, add blog posts about recent shoots, update your pricing, rearrange your portfolio — all without calling me. I’ll train you during handover so you’re completely confident managing your own site.

Do you offer SEO for photographers?

Every photographer website includes basic SEO setup — page titles, meta descriptions, image alt text, and local keyword targeting. For ongoing SEO work — content creation, local citations, link building, Google Business Profile management — I offer monthly retainers starting from £250/month.

Should I use Squarespace or WordPress for my photography website?

I always recommend WordPress. Squarespace looks polished out of the box, but it’s limited — you can’t customise beyond their templates, SEO capabilities are basic, and you’re locked into their platform. WordPress gives you full control over design, functionality, and SEO. Every photographer website I build is custom-designed on WordPress, so it looks and performs exactly how you need it to.

Do you build websites for other creative businesses?

Yes. I also build websites for interior designers, architects, and other visual businesses where portfolio presentation is everything. The same principles apply — stunning galleries, fast loading, and built to generate enquiries. View my portfolio to see examples.
