Local SEO, UK-wide Google 51 five-star reviews

Local SEO services

I’m Spencer, a freelance SEO consultant who helps small businesses across the UK show up when nearby customers search: in Google Maps, the local 3-pack and the ordinary results underneath. Google Business Profile, reviews, citations, location pages and on-page SEO, done by one person with no lock-in contract.

Local SEO plans start at £250/month. Start with a free audit and I’ll show you exactly why competitors appear in the map pack and you don’t. I also optimise for AI search, so ChatGPT and Google’s AI Overviews can find and recommend you.

Spencer & Yogi, Podium DesignI practise what I sell. My own Google Business Profile sits first in the Brighton map pack for searches like "website redesign near me", with 50+ five-star reviews behind it. The same work that got me there is what I do for clients: a properly built profile, real reviews, consistent listings and a website that backs it all up.

Why it matters

Why local SEO wins more enquiries than national SEO

For most small businesses, the customers worth having are within driving distance. When someone searches "plumber near me" or "accountant in Horsham", Google shows a map with three businesses before a single website. Local SEO is the work that gets you into those three, and keeps you there.

Google says local results come down to three things: relevance, distance and prominence. You can't move your address, so local SEO works hard on the other two: You don't need a big local SEO company to show up in Google Maps; you need consistent, well-managed basics.

The right primary and secondary categories on your Business Profile
Services, products and a description that match what people search
A steady flow of genuine reviews, and replies to every one
Name, address and phone identical everywhere you're listed
Service and location pages on your website that Google can match
Local links and mentions that prove you're a real, active business

If you'd rather do it yourself, my free local SEO checklist covers the essentials. If you've tried and it isn't working, my guide to why local SEO stops working covers the usual culprits.

What's included

What my local SEO services include

No silver bullets, just the handful of things that actually move map rankings, done properly and every month. I do the work myself rather than handing you a PDF of recommendations.

Google Business Profile optimisation

Categories, services, business description, opening hours, service areas, photos, products and regular posts. Most profiles are missing fields Google uses to judge relevance. I fill every one properly and keep it active, because an abandoned profile slowly slides down the map pack. Unlike a local SEO agency, I do the work myself, so you always know who's looking after your profile.

Citations and NAP consistency

Your name, address and phone number need to match exactly across the directories Google trusts. I find the old addresses, wrong numbers and duplicate listings that quietly undermine you, fix them, and build the quality citations you're missing. No spam directories. My local SEO services UK clients use cover Google Business Profile, citations, reviews and location pages.

Reviews that keep coming

Reviews are the biggest prominence signal a small business controls. I set up a simple way to ask every happy customer, and a routine for replying to every review. I never buy reviews or write fake ones: it's against Google's rules and it gets profiles suspended.

Service and location pages

Your Business Profile points at your website, so the website has to back it up. I build or improve the pages Google matches to local searches: one clear page per service, and genuinely useful pages for the towns you cover, not thin copies with the place name swapped. As a local SEO expert, I look at the searches that bring in real enquiries, not vanity keywords.

Local technical SEO

LocalBusiness schema, fast mobile pages, a consistent address in the footer, a proper contact page, and Search Console set up so Google can crawl what matters. Because I build and maintain WordPress sites, I fix these myself instead of leaving them as "notes for your developer". Working with a local SEO specialist who also builds websites means on-page fixes happen quickly.

Tracking you can actually read

Map pack positions for your key searches, calls, direction requests and website enquiries, reported monthly in plain English. You'll see what I did, what moved and what's next, without a dashboard full of vanity metrics.

The process

How local SEO with me works

The same four steps for every business, whether you're a plumber in Crawley or an accountant in Leeds. Everything happens remotely, so where you're based doesn't matter.

First

Free local SEO audit

I check your Business Profile, reviews, listings, website and the three businesses currently beating you in the map pack, then tell you honestly what's holding you back. Google Maps SEO is often the fastest win for local businesses, because the map pack sits above the normal results.

Then

Profile and citation clean-up

The quick wins first: categories, services and description fixed, duplicate and inaccurate listings cleaned up, and the missing citations built.

Next

Pages and reviews

Service and location pages improved or built, LocalBusiness schema added, and a review routine set up so new reviews arrive every month.

Every month

Track, report, repeat

Profile posts, new citations and links, and a plain-English report showing map positions, calls and enquiries against last month.

How long does local SEO take to work?

Expect meaningful local SEO results in 3–6 months. Profile fixes can move you within weeks, but reviews and citations build up over time. Anyone promising the map pack in a fortnight is either targeting searches nobody makes or being dishonest.

How much do local SEO services cost?

My local SEO starts at £250/month for Local SEO Starter, with SEO Growth at £500/month and SEO Premium at £1,000/month. A one-off audit is £295. Everything is monthly rolling with no minimum contract.

Can you guarantee a place in the Google Maps 3-pack?

No, and be wary of anyone who does. Distance from the person searching is one of Google's three local ranking factors, and nobody can change it. What I can do is make your business the most relevant and most prominent option in your area, which is what moves you up for the searches that matter.

Do I need a shop or office for local SEO?

No. If you visit customers, like most trades do, you can run a service-area Business Profile with your address hidden. You do need a genuine address you operate from, though: virtual offices and PO boxes break Google's guidelines and risk suspension.

Do you only do local SEO in Sussex?

No. I'm based in Brighton, but local SEO works just as well remotely, so I work with businesses across the UK. If you're in Brighton or Sussex specifically, my SEO services in Brighton page covers that in more detail.

What's the difference between local SEO and national SEO?

Local SEO targets customers near you: the map pack, "near me" searches and town-name searches, driven mostly by your Business Profile, reviews and listings. National SEO targets searches with no location at all, which depends far more on content and backlinks. Most small businesses should get local right first.

Will local SEO help me show up in AI search?

Yes. ChatGPT and Google's AI Overviews lean on the same signals when they recommend local businesses: a complete Business Profile, consistent listings, reviews and a website that clearly says what you do and where. When I checked, ChatGPT recommended my own business first for a Brighton WordPress web design search, citing my reviews and website.
