Developing a designer’s vision for an industry leader
Merson Digital is a London-based company specialising in complex large-scale digital display and signage. They’ve been delivering signage projects since 1938 and are now leaders in the field — handling everything from expert design and bespoke manufacturing through to installation and ongoing monitoring. Their work spans DOOH, transport, and stadium projects.
Their in-house graphic designer, Andy, had created the visual direction for a new website and needed someone to build it out on WordPress. He approached me to handle the development.
The brief
The designs were ready — my job was to translate them into a working website that matched Andy’s vision and gave the team independence to manage content themselves. For a company with Merson’s history and portfolio, the site needed to feel established and professional while showcasing the scale of work they deliver.
The build
We ran weekly check-ins throughout the project to keep everything aligned. When you’re working from someone else’s designs, that regular communication is essential — it means questions get answered quickly and nothing drifts off course.
Design implementation
Andy provided detailed designs and I built them out on WordPress. The goal was pixel-perfect implementation that worked properly across all devices and browsers. With a portfolio spanning decades of large-scale projects, the site needed to handle a lot of visual content without feeling cluttered.
Templates for independence
I set up templates for case studies and portfolio items so the team could add new projects themselves. For a company constantly working on high-profile installations, being able to showcase fresh work without waiting on a developer is important.
Server migration
Once complete, I migrated the site onto their in-house server, which I continue to manage for them. It gives them full control over their infrastructure with the technical support handled.
The result
Merson Digital now have a website that reflects their position as industry leaders. The design Andy created comes across exactly as intended, and the team can keep the portfolio current as new projects complete.
